The final evaluation of the project of national relevance in the education sector for the government of Maldives, “Capacity Building for Joyful and Effective Teaching and Learning in Sciences in Maldives,” involved an in-depth assessment using specifically designed evaluation tools.
This unique multi-partner initiative was designed to enhance the levels of quality education in the Maldives and the atolls in the area of Science education, specifically. The focus was on teaching-learning of science and pre-service teacher education by strengthening of national and local institutions, in keeping with country’s Vision 2020. The project partners were Japanese-Fund-in-Trust (JFIT), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Ministry of Education, Government of Maldives, National Institute of Education (NIE), Maldives National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM), Maldives National University (MNU) and Centre for Environment Education (CEE).
The qualitative final evaluation comprised reviewing a range of documents, analysing the extensive data available with all the stakeholders, conducting in-depth discussions with the partners and stakeholders, and intensive focus group discussions with all the stakeholders - policy makers, government, master trainers, teachers, and trainees of pre-service teachers, staff, UNESCO and NATCOM officials in Maldives. A final comprehensive report detailing the impact, outcome, and the findings of the final evaluation with a detailed road map was created for the scaling up of the project in Phase II.
